Our online Marketplace is a free-to-use service for buying and selling second hand photography equipment built on the same principles of trust, transparency and value as our photo lab.

The Marketplace offers great bargains on all types of professional photo equipment from Cameras and Lenses to Lighting and Accessories.

Trust, transparency and value

“While it was an uphill struggle to compete against the likes of eBay, we now receive numerous listings daily from people that value our niche in the trade of photographic equipment at no cost to the user,” says Managing Director Stuart Waplington.

Trust is at the heart of The Marketplace and each item listed for sale is manually reviewed and verified by our team to ensure safety for buyers and sellers alike. Both For Sale and Wanted ads are shared with our active online communities through dedicated Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Keep shooting: Don’t miss our latest bargains

“We are passionate about making it possible for photographers (this includes ourselves) to keep shooting and improving as artists and professionals”" explains Stuart.

“We aim to achieve this by offering our clients, friends and small businesses the easiest interface to exchange pre-loved equipment to other like-minded photographers.”

Excellent customer feedback

The Marketplace has received hundreds of listings from photographers and small businesses to date with excellent customer feedback for the ease of use and completion of sales. We have recently teamed up with PhotoVoice to list over 100 analogue photography items with all profits going directly to the charity.

Kerry Banner, director of Capture PR, was looking for a second full frame camera body as she had a wedding coming up and needed a back up. “Buying second hand from auction sites is just too risky,” she says.

“The Marketplace was excellent! It was good to find a quality used kit in my area,” Kerry explains. “I bought two items – all exactly as listed – better in fact. I’d definitely use the Marketplace again and recommend it to other photographers.“

Check out our staff favourites from the daily listings on our marketplace facebook group and keep updated about all listing on our marketplace twitter feed.

XVI is the first of this year’s degree show photography exhibitions at theprintspace. It displays the final works of 16 graduates of the FDA Foundation Degree Photography course held at City College Brighton.

Andrew Young, Laura Drazek, Sam Geals, Sophie Graver, Georgie D’Albiac Brewin, Alice Volk, Lucy Crascall, Niloufar Stevens, Melissa Dopkuyucu, Trudy Furini, Abi Darke, Zhuolin He, Rebecca Moody, Peter Tierney, Sophie Elliston, Ella Bernhardt

_______________

XVI endeavors to achieve an awareness of the photographic process exposing fragility between the photographic process and the photographers themselves.

The works of the 16 graduates showcase a pertinent range of ideas using the exhibition as a platform for them to discover and grow in their chosen discipline.

XVI forges the ambitions and aspirations of 16 aspiring photographers who hope to extend themselves as individuals as well as photographers.

The final exhibition and the course allows each student to express themselves freely to provide a holistic and vocational experience.

Each member of the group has produced a series of photographs in response to an open brief. With no conceptual or aesthetic constraints placed upon the photographers, the direction of the output has been diverse, with work aiming to display subjects of the self, the environment and the unfamiliar.

Keith Aggett came third in our ‘water’ photo contest. Here he tells us how his original passion for photography came from fishing.

British photographer Keith Aggett was born in Devon. “Having lived there all my life, I feel lucky to have such beautiful coastline and moorland on my doorstep,” he tells us.

Keith used to be a fisherman with a click camera and got into photography seven years ago. “My original passion for photography came from fishing, watching the morning sunrises, the mist hovering above the lake, the flare from the sun and the end of the day marked by fading light and falling shadows,” he says.

Pieces © Keith Aggett

“These inspirational moments sparked a desire to capture those magical moments in time and entice me into the world of photography.”

Self taught in photography and software manipulation, his enthusiasm has been focussed on landscape and macro photography, specialising in long exposures using assorted filters.

Clean, stylisch and atmospheric

“Visualising what the image will look like once downloaded and manipulated within different software packages motivates me to produce an image that I can be proud of.”

The 43-year old gets inspired by B& W fine art photographers like Kenna, Levin and Hoflehner. “I try to capture this style within my own work,” he explains. “I love the clean, stylish and atmospheric work which all three portray so well.”

Dignity © Keith Aggett

When printing his images with us Keith usually goes for the Epson Semi-Gloss paper.

“It gives great detail and makes the image very punchy and eye catching which works well with my type of processed image,” he says.

Keith is a regular reader of theprintspace blog. “I check the blog page quite often just to see some great work and that is where I came across the water photo contest,” he says.

Into the Void © Keith Aggett

“I decided this would be a good round for me to enter seeing as most of my images feature coastlines,” Keith explains.

With his image ‘Into the Void’ Keith made the third place in theprintspace ‘water’ competition and won his image printed on our Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper.

Currently Keith has a full time job so his photography time is limited, although he hopes these priorities will be reversed in the near future.

“All I can do for the moment is get out and shoot when I can,”he says. ”I keep looking, learning and moving forward.”

Have a look at his fascinating landscape portfolio at Keith Aggett’s website. Don’t forget to take part in our current ‘Tradition” photo competition for your chance to win great prizes!

Life Framer is a monthly crowd-driven photography award. It’s a platform designed to source creative work and showcase outstanding photography from amateur, emerging or established photographers.

“Our aim is to bring exposure to talented photographers from all over the world,” tells us Ralph Wilson, co-founder of Life Framer. ”Their talent, their vision, their life.”

Life Framer has been created by photographer Amaury Guillais and a team of photography and design lovers and is now running in its third month. The concept evolved over an evening chatting about how hard it is to find a voice in photography.

‘A Modern Life’ Winner © Anthony Cassell

“For us it seemed like there was a bit of a void between huge contests like Sony World Photography, WPO and tiny ‘pictures of pets’ style contests, and we thought we’d have a go at trying to fill that space,” Ralph says.

A contest with heart and creative value

“We wanted to create something with heart and creative value,” he explains.

Every month Life Framer make a call to arms to the photographic community to provide them with their photographs that best capture the monthly theme.

They shortlist their favourites, ask a guest judge to select their winners, and display them to the world on their website, and at the end of the cycle in a special gallery series in London.

Have a look at the shortlist of Life Framer’s month 2 with the theme ‘An Instant’.

‘A Modern Life’ Runner-Up © Jeff Seltzer

Who can take part?

Everyone over 18 years from anywhere in the world. “All you have to do is respond to our theme in a creative way,” explains Ralph.

Each theme is loosely based around an over-arching theme of ‘life’. To make this challenging theme more manageable we’ll be breaking it down into twelve sub-themes, each running for a month.

This month’s competition is ‘A Human Touch’. Taking part costs $10 for one image, $20 for up to three images and $30 for up to five images.

Life Framer make sure that all entrants retain full copyright of their images.

What can I win?

Each month you can win a great selection of prizes, and the top two photographers will also make it into the end-of-year exhibition.

The monthly winner gets US$400 honorarium, his/her image printed, framed and displayed at the end-of-year exhibition, his/her image exhibited Life Framer’s website and social media sites, an interview featured on their blog and feedback from their guest judge.

“We’re working tiredlessly to get our winners interviews and reviews too, and to make the final exhibition as big an event as possible,” says Ralph.

For 'Working Beautifully' photographer Nigel Hudson and digital artist Timothy Cumming have created an extensive visual archive of twenty-first century workers in Swindon by portaying their skills, tools and workplaces.

For ‘Working Beautifully’ photographer Nigel Hudson and digital artist Timothy Cumming have created an extensive visual archive of twenty-first century workers in Swindon by portaying their skills, tools and workplaces.

Photographer Nigel Hudson and artist Timothy Cumming collaborated for over a year and have produced a portfolio of over 700 composite photographs, digital and mixed media paintings with a nod towards August Sander’s ‘People of The 20th Century’.

21st Century Workers

“Slowly, the country’s on the rise, so we wanted to immerse ourselves in the contemporary look of work, its effort and its spirit – to picture the potential of the nation through work, because they’re the tools of our recovery,” explains Timothy.

Levered Lodging, Mini Plant Swindon

The artists chose Swindon specifically because it accurately models the skills and workforce of the nation. It’s demographics are often considered to reflect that of the UK.

“Swindon has a trading history within the UK, which to us, mirrors the UK’s trading history with the world,” explains Timothy.

Telling the full British workplace story

Nigel and Timothy have visualised the activity, trades and entrepreneurial spirit of 100 businesses in Swindon – the UK’s fourth most productive and fourth largest growth economy outside London.

“To us, it seems that the full British workplace story needs a fuller telling,” says Nigel.

Crown Assent, Southern Forestry

“Each of the 100 firms we’ve selected has shown the grit and guts necessary to thrive, even in a tricky economic climate. Worries about a triple-dip recession simply do not match the attitude or prosperity that we witness in these firms,” tells us Timothy.

Glimpse behind the scenes

The images take a glimpse behind the scenes of the some of the South West’s largest and smallest firms. “The beauty of work is layered in clutter, grim lighting and human pride,” he says.

All one hundred firms are featured on a 25 metre ‘tapestry’ created especially for this landmark show. One painting by Timothy and one photographic composite by Nigel will represent each firm. All works have been produced with theprintspace.

Timothy Cumming

Tim works in mixed, print and large-format digital media. A late comer to the world of art, he studied engineering at Glasgow University and has worked in the creative industries – mainly music, design, photography, web and software – both as artist and technician.

Joe Giacomet has been judging our ‘Water’ photo competition and you can now support his Kickstarter auction to fund his latest image ‘Cash for Gold’, a satirical look at The London 2012 Olympic Legacy.

What happened to Wenlock?

theprintspace client, sample 13 exhibitor and photo competition judge Joe Giacomet has turned to Kickstarter to raise £1500 to fund his latest photo ‘Cash for Gold’.

The photograph is a satirical look at the London 2012 Olympic Legacy as Joe wonders what might happen to the mascots after the games have gone. “The story goes that after a post Olympic depression Wenlock starts gambling living for the highs not seen since the summer, however these were short lived and drink soon becomes a problem,” Joe tells us.

“The image is set a year later when we find Wenlock inside a ‘Cash for Gold’ shop cashing in his last three gold medals for one final roll of the dice.”

Cash For Gold

‘Cash for Gold’ is sequel to Joe’s previous award winning image entitled ‘Ronald’s Dirty Secret’. “The reason I’ve decided to use Kickstarter is the cost of producing images to this standard”, says Joe.

Ronald’s Dirty Secret © Joe Giacomet 2012

“Cash for Gold” backers can choose from a wide range of rewards for their funding pledge including signed prints of the finished image and the chance to get hands on experience at the live shoot! You could even pledge “Cash for Costume” and receive the custom-made mascot outfit used in the shoot!

Joe has his own studio, camera and the majority of the lighting needed. The £1500 of the Kickstarter auction will be used to build the set, get the props, have the costume altered, pay a crew and rent in specialist lighting equipment.

London 2012 Olympic Mascots Wenlock and Mandeville

On a Budget

Joe has worked on a variety of commercial projects from ad campaigns for Natwest to press shots for Warp Records.

He describes himself as “a young photographer, full of ideas unfortunately without a wallet too match! However what I love doing most is creating my own artistic projects such as this.”

Joe is sourcing props and building most of the set himself. He will also be personally covering the cost of the rewards to backers.

Check out more of his work at Joe Giacomet’s website.

‘Medium Rare’ brings together four fresh new photographers showing recent works from all four ‘quarters’ of Medium Rare.

The Medium Rare collective consists of Elle Sambrook, Henry Osman, Samuel Jay and Matthew Oxley. Despite differing styles and approaches, the four artists are tied by a shared sensibility and vision.

Sensibility and Vision

The concept of the two-week exhibition is to bring free thinking, free working, fresh new artists together and share their most recent bodies of work in one collaborative space.

Styles and themes range from minimalist landscapes, to the challenging of traditional forms in the natural world, to abstract expressionism, and Freudian theory in contemporary still life.

© Samuel Jay

das Es

A visual representation of primal subconscious functioning, controlled within society, embraced within the rest of the natural world. Objects of violence and confrontation become sculptures of sublime beauty.

Modernism, Freudian theory, sexual selection and advertising have all in some way or another imprinted their influence on the series by Samuel Jay. For the exhibition he had his work printed on our C-type Matt paper and mounted on MDF.

© Matthew Oxley

Fragments

An undeniably cerebral and liberating series from Matthew Oxley, giving space, time and above all, thought, to fragments of life never before seen or represented in such a way.

These photographs, all taken from the feathers of a single European Starling, are transformed into abstract catalysts to be interpreted as freely and individually as the subjects themselves once were. Matthew had his image printed on Canson Baryta paper and mounted on 3mm Foamex.

Form

Henry Osman confronts, challenges, bends and breaks the rules of representation and construction of the natural object, and with it he questions our traditional relationship with the photograph.

Through the abstraction of structure and the implementation of patterns, shapes and tones, ‘Form’ is as much a study into organic matter as it is an exploration into the assembled image itself. Henry went for Fuji Matt paper and MDF mounting.

Photographer and client of theprintspace Barry Cawston is holding an exhibition, ‘Storyville’, at the James Freeman Gallery.

Make sure you visit the gallery between the 16th of May to the 8th of June for your opportunity to see Cawston’s stunning images in person.

Gallery owner James Freeman comments on Cawston’s photography:

“Whatever leaves a mark tells a story – no scars means no proof. And like the face of an old prizefighter, the streets of every town provide a plethora of old knocks and bruises, fruit of a million different tales of the city. Places tell their stories through decay and deterioration, and in Storyville, British photographer Barry Cawston has made a project of recording them.”

‘Garage Doors’

“Barry starts by picking out basic visual patterns. On one side are the regular rhythms of architectural design, ranging from aging colonial townhouses to fading concrete tenement blocks, which he uses as a kind of geometric framework to structure his compositions.”

Juxtaposing Geometry and Chaos

“Then on the other hand, he looks to the random ways in which people inhabit and add colour to them: mismatched licks of paint, rough-strung lines of clothes, broken windows, totalled cars… Bring the two together, and what emerge are intimate portraits of the lifeblood of the built environment.”

‘Tenement’

“A collection of windows becomes a kind of brutal Modernist advent calendar, packed with urban tales past and present. Mountains of scrap metal alternate with topiaried trees like a half-earth, half-machine landscape in the grounds of a Japanese junkyard. Running colours streak like a paint-splattered rainbow across the face of a crumbling building. This is the city as a beautiful idea: efficient, planned and functional; and then this is also the place where people live – shambolic, eccentric, all over the shop.”

Capturing the Randomness of Human Behaviour

“Windows appear as a repetitive motif: places to look into, intriguing little gaps in a hard façade, revealing only a small snapshot of the life that is going on behind. Likewise, a sense of repetition in all the seeming randomness of human behaviour is a consistent theme, such as in his Myanmar air balloons, caught in a moment floating inadvertently in formation high above the ancient temples below.”

‘Sunset Over Lake Inle’

“Through his images, Barry manages to capture something of how people and their environment interact and influence each other – how the city becomes infected with the harebrained unpredictability of people, while these same people become ever so slightly more regular and more ordered through their habitat. Storyville shows how the man-made environment somehow becomes organic and palpable, thanks to the lives and stories that flow through and leave their mark.”

‘Storyville’ opens on May the 16th at 6:30pm at the James Freeman Gallery, Islington. Admission is free.
