Showing the World as I See It

John Wilson

Waiting – John Wilson. Shot on Canon EOS 5DMKII. Iceland

“For the past 9 years I have been based in London working within the Commercial photography world. Before coming to London I completed a Photography BA(HONS)  at Blackpool and the Fylde college. The recent passing of my father has made me reassess why it was I chose to follow my love and passion for this wonderful medium.

“My love of photography started when I realised that it would allow me to show the world to others as I see it. It was my view of reality as to me the world is a place of constant beauty and wonder, somewhere that is continually shifting and moving. A scene that is beautiful today will still be beautiful tomorrow, possibly more so, but for different reasons. The light, weather, circumstance, or my perception may have changed and it is the anticipation of what will happen next that excites me.

“I like to question the concept of the “everyday” and the “known”, reassessing what we observe daily and take for granted. I am captivated by those everyday places and people dismissed by others as boring, mundane and invisible.

“Within my landscape work I like to address the concept that some may distinguish between natural and man made. I believe the lines are more blurred. What is natural, when man’s influence is everywhere and is it any less beautiful as a result? While with my portraiture, I like to capture how people define themselves within subcultures of society through their mode of dress.

“In my work, I capture the innate beauty of my subject – the light, the personality, the composition or the “occurrence” of a scene.
Lending to the image, the emotion and atmosphere that I have personally experienced while viewing the subject matter. In my daily life I am the constant voyeur observing what goes on around me. Asking myself, what is taking place around the next corner? What am I on the brink of discovering? What is going to happen next?

“This image is taken from a series I have been shooting of the British Burlesque scene during 2011. I was interested in how the Burlesque scene had become such success for attracting “ordinary” women to it. It is full of women that had “normal” jobs but that loved to perform at Burlesque nights under stage names. It seemed to me to be an amazing way of escapism and expression.”
