Borders sit <em>inside<\/em> the paper, so adding one reduces the printed image area rather than making the paper bigger.<\/p>\n<p>Two readouts at the bottom of the screen update in real time as you work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Print size<\/strong> \u2014 the full paper size.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Printed area<\/strong> \u2014 the image area once any borders are subtracted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The price also updates live as you change your settings.<\/p>\n<h4>Switching between millimetres and inches<\/h4>\n<p>A toggle at the top switches every measurement between millimetres and inches. It converts the paper-size fields, all the border fields (the labels change too, for example &quot;Top (inches)&quot;) and the border summary line. For example, the same sheet might show as 571 \u00d7 714 mm or 22.5 \u00d7 28.1&quot;.<\/p>\n<h4>Setting your paper size and proportions<\/h4>\n<p>Enter your <strong>final paper size<\/strong> \u2014 a width and a height. The <strong>Proportions<\/strong> control decides how the two interact:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Locked<\/strong> (the default) \u2014 editing one side automatically adjusts the other to keep your image&#x27;s original aspect ratio (&quot;Editing one side keeps your image&#x27;s proportions&quot;).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unlocked<\/strong> \u2014 set the width and height independently (&quot;Width and height are independent&quot;). Unlocking can nudge a value very slightly due to rounding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Adding a border<\/h4>\n<p>Use the <strong>Add border<\/strong> toggle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No<\/strong> \u2014 a full-bleed print, where the image runs right to the edge of the paper. No border options are shown.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yes<\/strong> \u2014 reveals the border options below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can then choose a <strong>preset<\/strong> border or a <strong>custom<\/strong> one.<\/p>\n<h5>Preset borders<\/h5>\n<p>Presets give you a quick size and distribution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Size<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Small<\/strong> \u2014 a narrower border.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large<\/strong> \u2014 a wider border.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Distribution<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Even<\/strong> \u2014 an equal border on all four sides.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bottom weighted<\/strong> \u2014 equal top, left and right, with a bottom border around twice as deep. This gives a gallery or mount-board look, and is handy if you sign or number your prints below the image.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Border sizes are proportional to the paper size, so they stay balanced at every size. As a guide, on a 571 \u00d7 714 mm sheet you&#x27;d see roughly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Small + Even<\/strong> \u2192 about 35.7 mm on all sides<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large + Even<\/strong> \u2192 about 50 mm on all sides<\/li>\n<li><strong>Small + Bottom weighted<\/strong> \u2192 about 28.6 \/ 28.6 \/ 57.1 \/ 28.6 mm (top \/ right \/ bottom \/ left)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large + Bottom weighted<\/strong> \u2192 about 42.8 \/ 42.8 \/ 85.7 \/ 42.8 mm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are examples \u2014 the actual figures scale with your paper size.<\/p>\n<h5>Custom borders<\/h5>\n<p>Custom lets you set each side yourself, using four fields \u2014 <strong>Top<\/strong>, <strong>Right<\/strong>, <strong>Bottom<\/strong> and <strong>Left<\/strong> \u2014 in whichever unit the toggle is set to. The summary line shows the result, for example &quot;Borders: 20 \/ 30 \/ 40 \/ 50 mm&quot;, or &quot;Borders: None&quot; when all four are zero.<\/p>\n<p>Custom also adds a <strong>border mode<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Relative<\/strong> \u2014 &quot;Your image is the boss.&quot; Your values are recalculated to stay proportionate to your image&#x27;s shape. For example, an absolute 20 \/ 30 \/ 40 \/ 50 becomes 20 \/ 16 \/ 20 \/ 16.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Absolute<\/strong> \u2014 enforces the exact sizes you enter, cropping the image slightly if needed to fit the remaining space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Good to know<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The border summary line always reads in the order <strong>Top \/ Right \/ Bottom \/ Left<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Adding or enlarging a border shrinks the <strong>Printed area<\/strong> readout, while the <strong>Print size<\/strong> stays the same.<\/li>\n<li>The unit toggle, proportion lock and border settings all update the live preview and price instantly.<\/li>\n<li>A typical order to work in: choose your units \u2192 set your paper size (locked or unlocked) \u2192 toggle <strong>Add border<\/strong> \u2192 pick
